How Employers Can Create Job Postings That Actually Work

Job postings aren’t what they used to be. Before the internet took over, most “want ads” appeared in newspapers or trade magazines. They were short, formulaic, and to the point.

Today, things are different. Job seekers live online—and they expect more. Modern postings need to strike the right balance between clear details and compelling language to grab attention and drive applications. A recent survey sheds light on what candidates really want—and what turns them off.

The Top Turn-Offs

Could your job postings be scaring away talent? According to a March 2025 study by U.K.-based consultants StandOut CV, the answer might be yes. The firm surveyed 1,092 adults to find out what applicants find most off-putting when applying for a role. Here are the top three “icks”:

  1. Minimal PTO
A whopping 65.5% of respondents ranked employers offering only the minimum annual leave allowance as their biggest turn-off. While U.S. employers aren’t federally required to provide paid time off, the takeaway is clear: candidates value generous PTO and work-life balance.
  2. Mandatory Social Media Engagement
Coming in second at 64.6%, candidates dislike being required—or strongly encouraged—to interact with an employer’s social media content. Even when a job is on the line, applicants don’t want forced digital socializing.
  3. No Salary Transparency
Third on the list, at 63.8%, is the absence of pay information. With many states now enforcing pay transparency laws, omitting salary details can hurt your chances of attracting top talent.

Best Practices for Better Job Postings

Want to avoid the dreaded “icks”? Follow these guidelines:

  • Be Clear and Concise
Start with a short, engaging summary of the role. Skip jargon and vague terms like “rock star” or “hustler.” Use plain language to outline responsibilities, expectations, and how the position supports your mission.
  • Highlight What Matters
Candidates care about pay, benefits, flexibility, and culture. Include a salary range, PTO details, and perks like health insurance and retirement plans. Transparency builds trust.
  • Show Authenticity
Use a tone that reflects your employer brand—professional yet approachable. Avoid clichés and consider adding employee testimonials for a human touch.
  • Simplify the Process
Link to an easy, mobile-friendly application process. Clear instructions and minimal steps reduce drop-offs.

Final Thoughts

In today’s competitive hiring market, job postings need more than just the basics. Craft yours with care, include the right details, and showcase what makes your organization unique. Doing so can help you attract the talent you need while supporting your long-term goals.
